Cannon Beach Layers

Hi Folks,

Here's one from our recent trip - of which the Silver Falls gathering was part. We ended up at Cannon Beach and despite the relatively uncooperative weather we dragged our gear around the beach looking for images. This is from one of the vantage points offered by Ecola State Park. I ditched the colour info in PS not knowing really how to convert a colour image into a good black and white, so I ended up with this monochrome. Actually, there didn't seem to be much colour info to ditch! I also tried to adjust the contrast a little to get the delineation between the layers. I tried not to put Haystack Rock in the center of the comp, but that was the result of trying to keep other stuff out of the comp at the time of capture. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Shooting info:

300mm f4
f13 at 1/320
-1 exposure compensation
ISO 100

I like the layers - could use a little more pop - try a local contrast enhancement (USM: 18, 75 pixel size, 0). That will give even more 3D effect.

Nice layering of the ridges, but it needs more contrast. Go into levels and adjust the whitepoint, i.e. move it to the left. Set the blackpoint for the Haystack.

Hi John, Hi Inge,

Thanks for the comments on the layering - and for the tips on how to bring it out more. To be honest, I was not sure what you meant John, so I adjusted the levels as Inge suggested and it really made a difference! John, if you could maybe explain your method a little more that would great as I'm not really very well versed in PS yet. Thanks again.

Sure, Lee. There is a "Sharpen" plug-in under the filters called Unsharp Mask (USM for short). Call that up and put in the parameters I mentioned above.... it will give a nice 3D definition to your image.

I agree, needs more contrast. The composition is quite interest though. I am surprised so little people are commenting on this.

Hi John,

Thanks! I thought that was what you meant. I tried it that way as well and that also works to separate and pop the layers more. Thanks again.

Hi Phil,

Thanks very much for the kind words. Actually, that was the kindest thing anyone has ever said about an image I've posted. Thanks.
