grouper and a bit of website news

hi all,

have managed to get my first trailer up and running on my
underwater dedicated site.

you can download it at www.eyemocean.com and click on the 'projects'
link in the nav bar at the top of the page. you'll probably only want to do this if you have broadband as it's about 30 MB. would love to hear any comments though.

in the meanwhile here's a red sea image of a malabar grouper. these can grow really big if they're not speargunned. they are heavily territorial and curious and will come and stare a diver right in the face if it takes their fancy.

we just found out that a monster local version here in ecuador that used to enthuse divers, and weighted in excess of 500lbs just got speargunned.

regards,

mark

What a marvellous creature, Mark - a real pity with the "fishing". The photo is really effectful, but would probably be even better at a larger size! :toast:

Hi Mark

Firstly excellent web address 'eyemocean' , nice one

I had a look at your website and your QuickTime movie. I guess the website is still under construction as some of the links didn't seem to work or display anything (e.g. about ).

However the general look and style of the website is good although I feel it could make more use of the space available on a browser window. It looks a bit small and cramped into the top half of a browser window.

Also I don't like the home link taking you back to the 'Enter' page so you then have to click on Enter again.

I viewed your QuickTime movie. I thought it was excellent (if a bit small to view on the screen). I would consider using YouTube to embed video clips into your web pages. I have seen this on other websites and it works well. I don't like the way your movie is shown in the middle of an otherwise empty browser window. But maybe this is work in progress on your part.

The movie itself flowed well, a good soundtrack which worked well with the film (a bit of Egyptian Massive Attack going on there!). I assume the slow frame rate is for web viewing purposes only and the original is higher fps. Although the effect of the slower FPS is actually quite cool and has a bit of a stop frame animation feel about it. The quality of the images and the video footage was excellent and the transitions between scenes and the text worked nicely. Overall a good production, it looked slick and professional to my eye.

Although maybe the fish/lap dancer ratio was a bit too heavily weighted towards the fish side of things  (only joking....)

Nice shot of a grouper by the way, but I agree with Helge, let's see it a bit bigger please.

cheers

Sean

thanks guys.....

re size, sorry i thought 450 was the maximum size. is it 640? am i getting confused!! oops...

sean, thanks for taking the time to critique the movie...i'm not sure what embed a movie to a site means...i was reading instructions on how to do it on wetpixel.com but i'm not sure what the effect is and what the advantages are?

yes the site is very much under construction. working on that now. lots to do lots to do.

yes everyone (male) seems to think there should have been more lap dancer!!!

re frame rate etc, yes this is about as clean as i can get it, i have to make a new project in half size and then compress that, slowing the rates right down etc to get it as small as 30 MB, my first two attempts ended up at 130 MB and 100 MB, the original work is 5 GIG, so something has to go in the way of compression. if i try to compress the original straight up it comes out very small and fuzzy.

thanks again for the critique, much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Great footage - love the way the camera suddenly stops when the moray eel? swims down your throat - take it he didn't go between your legs! I can almost hear your reg pop out!

Seriously, the footage and editing are top notch and its so good to see somebody putting something back into conservation - good luck with it all, I'm sure you'll do well.

On another note I only ever scuba dived in England and it shows what an amzing place it would be to dive in the Red Sea.

Cheers

Mark

Hello Mark
Sorry, but my connection is too slow for your video, but I am waiting for a faster connection from Orange in the near future. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed your site, you have some wonderfulU/W images. I think the grouper image is excellent, and I can imagine how good it must look as a big print. The maximum size here is 720 on the longest side BTW.
Best wishes
Phil :toast: :toast:
