Spent the last 2 hours of daylight in Richmond Park yesterday and wow was it worth it. I haven't seen such golden light in a while (when I have the camera with me at least). This was actually taken as the golden light was starting to lose its intensity but I knew it had the makings of a nice picture if only the subject would stop eating and look up! The waiting game paid off as I finally got my chance.
I was drawn to waiting for this image as I loved the way tree shadows started to creep across the field framing the deer in a pocket of light. It was my favourite shot for the day as the rest were typical 'Deer in the grass looking at you' shots, although granted they were bathed in stunning light.
At first I wasn't sure if I liked the way the back of the head blends with the background, however on the high res version its not so bad. The second ear helps counter this though as I have a shot where its not visible and that one looks really wierd!
D200, 200-400 VR at 400mm, 1/160 second at f5, ISO 200. Tripod mounted and about %10 cropped from the frame.

Nice light and good view point though a couple of paces to your right might have given a slightly more pleasing angle. I think there's enough light on the back of the ears/head to give seperation from the b/g.

Hi Richard
A nice composition, good eye contact and pose. I am not blown away by the colours though. Too much white and black in the scene to give a good sense of the evening light. I think getting a nicer vegetation in the shot which has a more golden colour would work best and help to emphasise the light.

Sean, what you don't like about the shot is exactly what I like about it, I love the light on the deer compared to the surroundings
