The wonders of Westonbirt arboretum
This is a shot I have tried several times on film, but never fully mastered the technique - its a combined double exposure comprising out of focus element taken with a narrow depth of field and a focussed subject element.

Digital makes the technique extremely simple now. Alternatively you can create a layer of gausian blur to replace the out of focus shot.

To arrive at the end image I started with the out of focus image, copied into a new layer the focussed image, and set its opacity to 50%. Flatten the layers and then increased the saturation and contrast with curves and then selectively "dodged and burned" to give the final moody effect.

Canon 1DsII, Zeiss 35-70mm at F3.5, ISO 100, tripod, 2 exposures defocussed and focussed. Full frame, converted to sRGB and resized

This was a popular technique on film and I think you've mastered it well here. I like the colours and the composition though I might be tempted to lose some of the black hole at the bottom right. Would then look good on a big canvas wrap.

Hello Mike
I agree with John, if you lose the bottom RHS black it really makes an attractive image with lovely rich colours.
Best wishes

i really like this image.

this image for me really sums up the critics of the digital age. if you had had this published ten years ago using film you might have been hailed as a genius, but i bet today there are plenty of people ready to criticise it for how digital manipulation is making photography a falsehood. 'go figure' as they say in the US.

i take my hat off to you for your creativity.
