Hi all, :wavey:

I'm here on business from Colorado and have Sat-Sun to do some shooting. I'm staying in Dublin (East Bay) and have a rental car. I'm mostly a landscaper and would like to spend some time among the big trees and along the coast.

My tentative plans are to work the coast North from San Francisco on Saturday, targeting bowling ball beach at low tide, mid-morning, and points in between. And then do a long redwood/waterfalls hike on Sunday at Big Basin Redwoods S.P.

What do you think of this itinerary? Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott! Welcome to 'currently raining' California! Dan Baumbach could speak to your itinerary better than I, but the places you've outlined are excellent.

Suggestion: Send Dan an e-mail from NPN. He can probably help you out.

I'm heading up to Mendocino on Friday and had considered a stop at Bowling Ball Beach, but decided against it after consulting the tide tables. You won't have a low enough tide during daylight hours. Also, this is still the tail end of the dry season, so your waterfall action will not be happening. Also, rain is forecast for Saturday, especially up north. Try Big Basin and San Mateo coast on Saturday, then head north on Sunday. You could hit various spots in Pt. Reyes, and/or head north on Hwy. 1 from Pt. Reyes past Bodega Bay and along the Sonoma Coast Beaches up to the Russian River. If you still have get-up-and-go, you could continue to Salt Point State Park.

Thanks for the comments, John!

The tide charts show a low tide at 9:50am for Sat and 11:15am for Sun for Point Arena (nearby). Or am I not interpreting the charts correctly - I am from CO, after all.  Or is a severe negative tide more desirable for this location?

I appreciate the suggestions based on weather, too. Thanks much!! :wavey:

FYI: Bowling Ball Beach is a long drive from SF. There's so many awesome sights along the way you might reconsider once you hit Marin or Sonoma Coast.

Lower the tide the better, but minus anything sounds good usually for most tide pools.

Yes, you'll have low tides, but they are +3-foot low tides -- not very low. I don't know if the bowling balls will even appear at that height.
