Greenfinch
Taken during a visit at this years winter feeding station.

For dull days I have now acquired a flash xtender which was used on this shot.

D2X - 600mm AFS
ISO 200, F6.3, 1/100sec
Using vehicle as a hide

Comments much appreciated as always :toast:

Very nice Vince. The flash extender is a useful device.

Hi Vince

Good pose but I am not convinced by the colours, especially the yellow strips along the wing edge which look like you have coloured in with a felt-tip pen! Possibly you need to adjust the colour balance if you are using flash, especially if you are shooting in JPEG mode where the colour balance is done in camera. Maybe one of those grey card things would be handy to get a good white balance.

Could just be my eyesight though, see if any other forum members comment on the colours.

cheers

Hi Sean, I see what you mean about the yellow wing edge but thats how it looks on the original shot taken, maybe the flash xtender brought out colour to this or maybe the Greenfinch was colouring a colour book with his mates before taking the trip to the feeder

I will check the white balance on the camera

Colouring is spot on Vince. Saturation is always slightly higher on duller days and the Flash will bring them out too. If you look for other images of Greenfinch on the web you'll see the same yellow wing edges that Sean is worried about.

I reckon its brilliant use of your extension, I've got one myself (not that I need one) but had no joy with the thing, this shot shows it can be used to great effect.

Hi Vince

I agree with Rob, I think your colour balance is OK. Nice perch, BG and good use of FF!

Hi

I agree with DK et al. Nice image, great use of FF (i'd never have spotted it, so that means it worked in my book). I'd just say be careful of your perches. This is nice and delicate and suits the bird, but dock does not grow horizontal like this. Don't be afraid to put the perch vertical or at least on a less incline than this, the birds will still land on it (hopefully!).
