I've just had some free time come available next week and was wondering if a visit to southern Utah would be worthwhile. I ask because I'm pretty sure all the cottonwoods leaves have dropped and I've never been to the area except in early Oct. or early May. Or, are there any other areas of our region (within a days drive of Denver) that may be photographically productive. Thanks in advance.

Are trying to shoot fall colors? or what Tell us more, what are you you are looking to shoot. Southern Utah is great for shooting landscapes all year round, plenty of good canyons, slots, petrogylphs etc.

Because its late in the season, I'm not looking for fall colors. Mainly looking for some nice scenic country to photograph. Just wasn't sure how southern Utah was after the leaves had dropped. Or are there other areas of the Rocky Mountain region that may be better in mid-November? I know southern Utah always has interesting things to photograph, but if I was asking this question in July or August I wouldn't initially consider it. Too dang hot and dry. Conversely, in November Colorado is kinda stuck between fall colors and winters deep blanket of snow.

Southern Utah is kind of a big area so I'm not entirely sure what particular area you have in mind. As for Moab, most of the cottonwoods have shed their leaves though there are a few good ones here and there. The crowds at the national parks have dissipated and you stand a good chance of having some of the popular areas to yourself in the middle of the week. We're supposed to have some stormy weather (rain and snow) next week so there may be some very interesting photo opportunities.

Hope this helps.

Snow already? So much for camping next week.

I'll be headed out to *somewhere* in Utah next weekend as well. Probably Moab, but maybe elsewhere. I haven't seen red rock deserts since Spring!

Les: Keep in mind the "professional weathermen" are the one's calling for snow, which means that most likely it will be in the 90's without a cloud in sight. Wouldn't it be nice to have a job that allows you to be wrong 50% of the time and not be in jeapordy of being fired!?

BTW: even when it snows here the temps aren't bad. Easily campable!

Sorry - last time I was there in winter, a thermal inversion kept the temperatures somewhere down in the mid-nasties. But the last time I was there just after snow, I got my avatar picture. I'll take the snow - especially if it's going to sublime into fog...
