Keep or ditch
Hyena in Kruger, running to chase away vultures on giraffe kill.

A grabbed shot this one, full frame with no time to switch to vertical format. Not sure whether it is ok with the clipping at top and bottom.

Tech spex: ISO400 500mm + 2x converter. 1/320 at f8. Have removed the tip of the muzzle of a second hyena from top right of frame and an OOF grass stem centre-right as I need to get opinions on the clean picture.

I say KEEP.

It just needs some contrast/saturation to give the shot some depth. The dust is making it look very flat.

Any shot like this i would say keep.Cuz its not like the usual bird on a branch shot now is it  .

Hi Andrew

I would say KEEP - did you take other shots which includes it's ear tips and maybe it's right paw. If you have you could easily in this image add more canvas and cloan in his missing bits assuming you are not opposed to this sort of Photoshop work. If you did you are not altering basic essence of the image - that said I still like it as it is!

Another vote for keep. Its a shame the ear is clipped but I like the sense of movement that the image conveys and I think that this outweighs the nit of the ear being clipped. Bit of a b*gger though

What is this obsession with clipped images?
Even some portrait photographers frown on subject's heads being clipped.....Bollocks
As David says the essence of the shot is all too obvious here, it matters not a jot if a tip of an ear or a toe nail are missing in this type of scene. Action is being portrayed very, very well and you'd be daft to bin it.

Andrew,

This is by far your best african image in my opinion. The dust and flying bits don't make for a flat image in my opinion, rather they portray the tumult of the scene. The tight crop also adds urgency to the expression on the hyenas face.

I'm a big fan of tight images. Have a look through a boradsheet newspaper and see some of the portraits there, a lot of them are tight cropped, some might say bits missing, some might say that it adds power.

Great shot. One of your best and one of the best I've seen on here for a while.

Mark.

Definately a keep, its quiet a powerful shot IMO

Only nit is the missing ear & paw but thats a minor issue I think

I don't think the ear clip matters a jot here, the photo is powerful and coveys well what is happening. Definately keep as is.

  phew that's a relief. I really liked the shot but didn't know whether I was just too attached to it, ignoring the "problem" foot out of frame. It seems not

Dave - the cloning probably would be a step too far for me on this occasion, although as I go back and look again it is rather tempting...
