Hi,

I've been so busy with work lately--just got back from a week-long Photoshop class for one thing--that I haven't checked out the NPN site for some time. Just saw the new Photo journalism forum and wanted to say thanks to Jim & Hank for putting it together. I'm sure it will be a great forum for learning how to photograph environmental issues and locations. Will have to post some photos now! One of the many things I like about NPN is that you are constantly working on improving the site. Thanks, Randy

Randy, it is our pleasure!

Hank and I had some discussion about what the gallery should be - and what it should not be - before it went online. We both agreed that cultivating the art and technique of environmental photojournalism is a very worthy cause, but also agreed that the gallery should not become a "hot topics" forum to debate the acutual isses - that is what the Hot Topics forum is for. The focus of the EPJ gallery is to discuss how to make effective EPJ photos, regardless of the issues depicted.

My sincere thanks to Hank for volunteering to help with the new gallery. I have long admired his work, professionalism and level-headed demeanor - his participation very much sets the tone and has helped us get off to a great start!

Thanks Randy (and you too, Jim)!

The gallery is barely off the ground, but it is already affecting my own photography and awareness of issues around the country and world. I find myself not simply clucking my tongue at local problems, but looking at them photographically: "How can I shoot that and make more people take an interest?" It has certainly energized both my shooting and my looking.

Thanks to all who have contributed so far, both the photo posts and especially the well-reasoned reviews. If we all become better photographers and help make a difference, I think it will be a very good combo.
