Great Tit
Scraping the barrel again. Tried processing this several times and I'm still not convinced. Thought I'd post it anyway so it's not all been a waste of time. I think the key is to shoot in better light from the start. My nits are the DOF and wished the pose was a bit more side-on to get the tail detailed. Should have gone to F8 possibly.Hindsight

Any comments appreciated.

Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing - I have lots of it!!!!
You've already mentioned my only nit - the DOF- but it's still an image I would be pleased to have. On the whole I would rather have this pose witrh the slightly OOF tail than a more side on pose.

Tis very nice, the pose is alert and the DoF doesn't bother me as it is sharp (perhaps a bit oversharpened) where it matters, the light hasn't really done you any favours, you might like to try adding a lavels adjustment layer (just dismiss the levels dialogue when it appears), set the blend mode to screen, then alster the opacity so that the blacks are showing a touch more detail, you can then fill the layer mask with black and paint with a soft brush in white onto the layer mask to bring the detail into the darker areas where it is needed, by using an adjustment layer you are only adding a small amount to the file size but retaining full flexibilty for going back and adjusting it. Hope that made sense?

I have to say I like it as well and not worried by lack of DoF . I would be happy if I had taken it.

Hi Graeme
you have mentioned the Nits yourself. I feel it is the BG. that lets down the picture it is so dark and the plumage of the Great Tit is also darkish. :toast:

The image is fine to me - i think the DOF is ample for the shot and it is sharp from beak to eye which is where it counts. It is a little dark but I found that it is easily remedied in PS using levels and is fine.

Hi Graeme

Nice image - but as has already been said a bit on the dark side!

I think a little fill flash is the answer here and I'd say the great thing about hindsight is that it is often a fundamental part of learning. Without hindsight you make the same mistakes over and over.
