I am happy with the prints that I get from this printer, but I would like to try a different type of paper other than the glossy canon paper I've been using. Any pointers?

There are many options for paper. One I like is Red River Paper. They offer many choices and also profiles for your printer. I like UltraPro Satin among others depending on what I am using it for. It worked well for me when I used the Canon I9900. It works very well now on my Epson. Of course this will vary as there are many other excellent choices depending on other factors and personal choice. Hopefully others will respond pointing out their preferences. Hope this helps. My preference for the older Canon i9100 is the Iford Smooth Pearl. They offer a profile online too.

If the printer is dye based, the Ilford Classic Pearl is supposed to be even better than the Smooth Pearl (which is microporous and designed for pigment inks).

I also prefer matte finish papers for some applications on my Epson printer, but without a matte black I don't know how this one would perform on those papers.

Ilford Classic pearl is SUPERB!. The online profile is quite good and the i9900 is soooo easy to tweak if you know how to work in CMYK. I very fortunate that my profession of 30 years is full color offset pressman so CMYK is the color language with which I'm most familiar.
