first Goldfinch
I will list all my nits and then wonder why on earth I've posted it. The simple reason i'm ignoring them all is the fact it's my first goldfinch shot. Hardly ever see these in places I frequent, so it was a very novel experience.

Taken in Rugby, Warwickshire a couple of weeks ago.

Nits are the perch, far too over-powering. Would have been happier if the subject was facing the other way. The tail pales into dark insignificance. The framing means the tail is too close to the RHS and bottom. If I was quicker I should have shot as portrait but I didn't have very much time. Now I can only improve on this image....

Appreciate your comments.

Graeme

I think your are being a little hard on yourself Graeme. All I see is a fine study of a Goldfinch. Pin sharp and perfect exposure with lovely detail in the whites. I would maybe consider cropping some from the left hand side - thereby lessening the prominence of the perch.

Hi Graeme,
I havn't got a single Goldfinch shot so I'd be thrilled with something as nice as this.
Definately agree with Dennis's cropping sugestion, not only to reduce the prominence of the perch, but also just to lose the 'bit' on the left.
Impressive sharpness and exposure.
The room behind the bird is fine for me,but as you say a little more room on the bottom of the frame would be ideal.
With a little careful Photoshop work I think it would be quite possible to increase the contrast between tail and background,if you felt the need.
All in all a fine first Goldfinch image.
Hopefully you'll get some further oppurtunities.

It's good to get the shot Graeme. Very nice on the bird but agree with your nits.

Hi Graeme, there is much to like in this image. Apart from the smaller nits you have covered yourself, I feel the bird is a bit out of balance - not sure though

Looks fine to me Graeme, I know the area this was taken and the light isn't that good at the best of times so imo you've done an excellent job on this shot.
Agree about the tighter crop, but the sharpness and colour look great, love the dark b/g too.

Nice work

The perch is a little heavy but it is a very good image anyway, lovely details in the whites :toast:

PS nice to see wildlife from Rugby as I lived there for about 20 years.
