First Bittern
Hi to all,
Visited RSPB Blacktoft Sands this morning , the trip turned into a complete wash out with heavy rain and nothing showing , so a change of plan and a quick drive down the M180 to Potteric Carr might offer better results and hopefully better luck. After setting up in Beeston hide and waiting for over an hour with still nothing to show for my efforts a Bittern appeared out of the reedbed and made it's way
towards me , before today I'd only ever heard the Bittern's booming call and never actually seen one in the flesh or should that be feather , so the day went from a wash out to a very special one.

Crop for comp , Contrast in CS2 , distracting reed to the righthand side cloned ( as you can probably see , not very good at cloning )

Canon 20D , 500mm F4 L IS , 1.4T/C , W/Hv2 , Gitzo 1325
1/100th at F8 iso 200

All comments and advice welcome

a superb encounter andy, and nicely captured. maybe some brightness/contrast adjustments would help pop it out of those reeds?

Lucky you a bird I have never seen.

I've seen a few Bitterns but never been fortunate enough to photograph one. I think you have made good use of your opportunity, showing the Bittern in its classic pose and environment.

Hi Andy

A spot of luck there. Good to see the bitterns are back at Potteric, will make a trip there soon. Good composition, just wondering if opeining up wide would have seperated the bird from the b/g a bit more.
