Rough-legged Buzzard (touch down)
The Roughlegs are back in my area. This year 4 adults and only 1 juvenile. Breeding season in Northern Scandinavia have been a disaster! This photo shows the juvenile going for prey in the grass. I have been after this kind of a photo for a long time, without success. Normally the action is too fast for my camera.

As I never use manual exposure, this situation is a bit tricky! Most of the time the Buzzard will hover against the sky (and you need to plus compensate). Then suddenly it crashes down into cluttered BG, and you need to negative compensate. So this time I chose to ignore the hovering photos, and just be prepared for touch down. Still I would have wished for better shutter speed.

20D + 500/4 + tc1.4; iso400, 1/320 f6.3 exp.comp (-1/3); beanbag on carwindow, cropped some to decentralize the bird. PS work: A bit selective brightening of the eye.

Well exposed and caught Helge. Do you use manual focus though? My AF tends to jump to the BG on this type of shot.

Excellent timing. It gives the impression of terrific speed. I hope it pulled up in time

Thanks for the comments guys!

Rob asked: "Do you use manual focus though? My AF tends to jump to the BG on this type of shot."

In this particular shot I used AF. In general I loose 19 out of 20 of these type of shots due to either AF or lack of speed. I have experienced recently with manual focus in "touch down" shots, and I do think that it have improoved a bit.

Cheer, Helge
