The tree was covered in moss and interesting bark pattens and I spent a whole hour extracting abstract images from it using my 180mm macro lens.

Hi Larry,
I've come back to this image several times before making a comment!
I quite like what you have done - but somehow I think it is lacking something - but I don't know what that something is!!!! Maybe its something to give a sense of scale? Whatever, it is nicely exposed and composed and nice to see something a little "different".

I like the ambiguity of the image. If you look at it quickly it looks like a rocky outcrop covered
in vegetation IMHO.

Hi Larry,
Its nice to see something different posted. I agree with Dennis but still a nice shot all the same.

Nice to see studies like this. The shot seems to lack a bit of punch - perhaps a boost to contrast and saturation may help? Also, it seems to have a coldish cast to it - perhaps a warmer white balance will improve it.
A few simple tweaks in PS should bring out the best in this shot.

Agree about boosting up the contrast, and also bring the brightness down atad, so to tone down the bark.
I also think it would look cool in B&W with the different textures.
I also agree about having something different on UKNP

Thanks for the comments, see now you know there are more things to photograph out there other than than birds and mammals although thinking about it i'd say that 40% of my work is garden birds, 40% birds in flight and 20% on flowers and insects, so it even made a refreshing change for me to photogrqaph something else for once.
Personally I'm not sure that anything is missing, it was a close up study to show the relationship and contrast between the bark and the moss and nothing more, the colours are also accurate to the subject, it was a very dull cloudy rainy day, I'd rather stay true to the soft harmonic natural colours than oversaturate it, its a nature photo that should be left looking natural IMHO.
I just took a look at your website, and it appears as though quite a few of the links are broken. In the portfolio section, quit a few of the links (e.g. mammals, insects, scenics) result in 'page not found' - in fact the scenics link actually leads to the insects page, although that's 'not found' either.
Thought I'd mention it in case you were unaware. The images that are there were very nice though!

Hi Michael
I'm perferctly aware that links are broken, haven't written the pages yet we had a bit of a problem last month when my ISP deleted my website off their server and my pc went doo lally so I lost my entire site (the only thing that wasn't backed up that day was the website folder... and am having to recode the whole thing from blank pages, (i code in html using notepad in american english, alot of people have urged me to get some software but to my mind better the devil you know..may sound sad but I enjoy HTML coding), have put the website online so I can test it on different size pc screens around at work, also give me a chance to reread what i've uploaded at work during my lunch hour so I can spot any errors..there are a few, am currently writing the codes for the "birds 1" page so as you will guess i've a long way to go, thanks for the tip re the landscapes page linking to the insects page.
With the baby (who's currently teething) I usually manage about 2 pages per week at the mo'
Having young children certainly does change your life in many ways, every single minute of free time is precious to me these days

That doesn't sound sad to me - I do exactly the same!!! I've only ever used Notepad to design websites!
