Greetings,

My first post to this group, but have been an NPN member for almost 2 years now. Thought I would post an image for CA fall color. Like many of you, I was in the Eastern Sierra Oct 9-14 and was there for the first snowfall of the season. Had a great trip and came home with some nice images.

This image was taken on the June Lake Loop between Silver and Gull Lakes where the beginings of Rush creek cross under 158. It's a spot I've gone to year after year and always find something new.
Shot with the 4x5 Zone VI field camera, Nikkor 210, Velvia 100F. I've been shooting Velvia 50, 100, 100F and Provia 100 all this year making some side by side comparisons. So far, 100F is loosing out and I'm looking forward to Velvia 50 II, which should be back early next year.

As far as an intro goes.... I'm a CA naitive and reside in Livermore. Been shooting 4x5 for something like 15 years now and love it. Started with a Busch Pressman, then the Japanese Nagaoka, Then Wista cherrywood until finally this year ended up with a Zone VI. I went this route to get the bellows extension for a longer lens. I shoot with 5 lenses now: Nikkor 75, 210, 300, 450 and a Fujinon 135.

Anyway, I hope to be more active in this group and perhaps meet up with some of you on an outing. I plan on at least a couple of winter trips to Yosemite - my favorite place.

Thanks!

Hi Lon!

Welcome to CANP!

Nice photo! I like the pastel coloration and the flow. It looks a little unsharp to me, though. The golden color is very nice.

I use 4x5, too, and so do a few others who hang out around here. I use a Tachihara. Its only shortcoming is bellows extension. Otherwise I really like it. I use a 90, 135, 180 and 300mm lenses. My preferred film is Astia 100F. On occassion I also use Velvia 100 (non F). I tried V-100F and did not like it due to its magenta cast, especially when scanned.

It would be great to get together! I am looking to go to Yosemite this month, sometime.

If you would like to be on the CANP e-mail list, shoot me a message and I'll add you to it.

Be sure to look at the threads regarding our 'Members List' and the 'California Fall' contest!

We appreciate your participation at CANP and hope to see more of your work!

Preston,

Thanks for the welcome and comment. I agree the image is soft. well, at least the web version. I'm lucky to get a good scan with my old UMAX flatbed.... but I know the original is sharp. :-) In fact I took a look at it and even decided the colors are way off from the original.
So, I re-worked it a bit, did some selective sharpening (didn't want to oversharpen the soft-flowing parts of the image, just around the rocks, and corrected the color a bit to reflect more of what the tranny looks like.

thanks again! I'll send a separate note regarding the member's list and email.

Welcom Lon! I actually like the softness as it really gives an impressionistic look to the image and to my mind, enhances the pastel like colors. So I guess I like your first version the most. But it's all in the eye of the beholder isn't it?!

Looking forward to seeing more of your images. :wavey:

Hi Lon, welcome.

I'm in SF, let me know when you are going to Yosemite, we could share a ride. I've been waiting for some snow to get back up there.

Corey, thanks for your comments. You're right - the eye of the beholder! I don't think I like the first one as much anymore after checking my original.

Enrique, it would be fun to travel to Yosemite. I'll make sure I post something here to invite anyone who can go. Of course the thing with Yosemite is being able to go on a moment's notice. The times that I have "scheduled" time to go, it rained and was ugly (relative to what Yosemite can be in winter). Although I may schedule a visit in February for Horsetail falls.
