Measuring Digital Dynamic Range, by Timothy Edberg
Unfortunately, the text is not online. Although I don't have the article in front of me at the moment, I clearly remember all of the top line DSLRs had a DR (as measured by his technique ) about 9 stops except the FinePix S3 that had an additional stop.

I was able to find a partial answer to my question in a review of the 5D on dpreview. Based on their tests both the 5D and D2x have about 8.2 EV of dynamic range when measuring jpegs. The 5D has a range of -4.7 to +3.5 while the D2x has a range of -5.5 to +2.7. So, according to their results more highlight detail is possible with the 5D, more shadow detail with the D2x. The testers also measured the DR of the 5D RAW files and found an increase in the highlight range as compared to jpegs. Unfortunately those of the D2X weren't done for comparison.
