I am doing a lot of travelling with work next year and I'm thinking about buying this lens for three reasons:
1. a lot of the time will be on boats so VR would be great
2. 70-200mm doesn't quite have the reach required for wildlife
3. 500mm is a little to large to travel with
I already have a 1.4TC but am thinking about a 1.7 or 2x to get that extra reach.
Does anybody have an experience of using the lens and converters who can give me some advice.
Many thanks
Paul

Why not the 200-400VR? i use this lens and its very versatile, especially with the 1.4 and 1.7 converters.

Hi Paul,
I had the 300mm f2.8 VR and used it regularly with all 3 of the coverters you mentioned above. I found the AF to be very quick. However I then sold this for the 200-400mm and find that to be the better lens due to its versatility. I don't use the 2X tc with this though as the AF really struggles.
