Well, as my 3&1/2 year old is becoming one of the biggest train fans I know of, we went BOTH weekends to the Holiday Express to see each of the trains running for their big Christmas fundraising drive to one day put the three steam engines under their own roof.
Needless to say, it is exactly like turning back the clock when things mattered more and life centered around doing things the right way or not at all (there's a lesson there for my contractors working on my house ).
So I'm there toting my cam, and like everyone else, we're all snapping pics. It was crazy with photogs, mostly am's like me(?) but I did see at least one PJ, maybe from the Oregonian? He had a lensbaby and a press pass, whatever that means...
Suddenly, the train lets out this body shaking low whistle, and a humongous cloud of steam starts jetting out from both sides at least 10 feet. The crowds quickly dissipate from the deafening noise and the wetness of the oddly smelling water. That's when ding-dongs like me who would like the elevate their photography decide to make the shot. One other person stayed and he was doused with steam (you can barely see him in this shot).
After I took this I quickly ran to the side to let it pass by. The other train, the SP 4442, runs tomorrow but then not until next year. If anyone is a trainhead in your family, it's more than worth going. It's right in PDX across from Oaks Park.
So, it was a fun day. Santa's onboard for the kids, too. But tomorrow's the last day if you're thinking of doing this!
Swami??? I was hoping to bump into your there;)

Kevin, great capture. The steam really makes the shot by simplifying the surroundings. Sounds like an interesting event. I doubt I will have time today, but maybe next year.

This train spent some time in Tigard a few months ago. I was the first one in line at the Rail crossing on Bonita road. I remember my jaw was hanging in amazment.

Great capture...I would clone out those wires though.
Thanks all! Rick, I know what ya mean. I'm on the fence on that one - trains are almost always near things like wires, buildings, etc. I already cloned out the tower that was looming behind it. I wasn't sure how far to go. Well, at least the wires would be easy to clone out
