Great Spotted Woodpecker
Today I went out to spruce up one of the feeding stations I go out to. Out came the spade & in went a dead tree trunk with the aim to attract a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers that I have seen in the area.

At 3pm with light fading fast in came the male bird & one shot was managed before he quickly flew off.

Conditions were dull so fill in flash was used, this probably contributed to him flying off like he did. Now the feeding area is re-established, all I need is good light rather than having to use flash.

More dof would of been nice, maybe next time when the light improves.

D2X - 600mm AF-S F4
ISO 320, F4, 1/60th sec
Using vehicle as a hide.

Thanks for looking :toast:

DOF looks good here Vince. The BG is nicely OOF

Too many abbreviations for me LOL. Good shot even with use of flash. Hopefully you will get some good shots of these in ambient light.

Lovely shot as always Vincent. Looks like plenty of depth of field to me. I'm not a huge fan of the fill flash though - makes it look very flat, but given the conditions you don't really have much choice. Hope he's still around when you get some good light.

DOF isn't a problem for me here Vince. I would certainly love to have taken it and given the light levels I think you have made a good job here. Look forward to seeing one taken under natural light.

Great shot Vince. I can't see any problems with DOF. Nice use of fill-n flash too. The 'pecker has a nice glow! No nits at all... :toast:
