Avian Barometer
It's always been interesting to me how these guys know when bad weather is on the way. It seems like the cardinals just seem to congregate at the feeder a day or so before the bad weather hits. They've really been at it today...

My purpose this morning was to see how noisy my images appear at ISO 400 through a 400mm f/3.5 lens. Thanks for looking - comments appreciated.

D2x, 400mm @f/3.5, 1/125 sec, noise ninja, sharpening brush.

Bill, beautiful shot of this northern cardinal. I really like the nice side light and catch light in your subject's eye. Very nice detail throughout. Since you have such a nice BG here I wonder if you could have gotten away with stopping down just one stop to gain just a tad more dof without your subject moving and causing blur?

Irregardless, this is a great shot, I wish it were in my portfolio! :toast:

Thanks Wayne! I may try to verify what Bjorn Rorslett has written about this this lens' use on a D2x, but "CA becomes a problem when stopped down (with some subjects), and sharpness is reduced until you get down to f/8 where it improves". I felt like I was pushing it already with such a slow shutter speed at 3.5, so I settled for less depth. I didn't mention it earlier, but this image has been cropped to about one-third the original size.

Really nice, Bill - what a beautiful bird! The light is fantastic, nice background blur, and nice and sharp where it needs to be. Nice job! Thanks for posting!

Bill,
Beautiful shot. The lighting is superb. I don't know much about noise or "CA" but I would have tried a shot at 5.6 just for comparison. I understand you're purpose for the 3.5 and it works great. Now I wonder how a 400mm would do on my D200. gc
