Four Hands - Pictograph
OK, so my winter shots don't include snow...

This shot was taken around this time last year. I was curious about how Fire Roof Ruin looked in mid-winter so I headed down that way to check it out. It wasn't particularly photogenic but the low angle of the sun was bouncing some pretty good light into that crevice next to it. The angle and amount of the light along with the natural curve of the underside of the rock combined to bring out the pictograph there - so I took a picture.

Although the harsh winter light drives me up a wall, it was really interesting being in that area at that time. I encountered an older couple who are stewards of the canyon and they had some very interesting things to say. Also, with no leaves on the trees or the scrub, the canyon gave up some of its secrets a little easier. It was such an educational experience it looks like I'll have to make mid-winter scouting expeditions a regular part of my photo trips.

Thanks for looking (and for reading this drivel!)

Who needs snow with a shot like this? This is a wonderful abstract with great patterns, light and of course the pictograph. This goes to show that if you have a good eye you can make a shot work. You can only grow from expeditions such as this.

This is really cool, CAZ. The natural curve of the rock really makes this dynamic. It took me much longer than it should have to find these handprints during my visit to Fire Roof Ruins. Come on out to Moab for a mid-winter scouting trip some time. It's the best time to be here! Shhhh, don't spread that secret around though.

Nice shot. I like the comp.

Nice shot, CAZ. That's my kind of winter shot. It's making me anxious to get out that way. I might do a slight S-curve on the image to bring out a bit more contrast, but otherwise I'm liking it.

I agree with Grant that it could use a little more contrast, but otherwise you've got a very pleasing pictograph shot.

Very nice! I saw a lone hand print, but never saw these 4 when I was there in November. Guess I've got another reason to revisit the spot.

Pretty cool, CAZ. Sounds like the experience was well worth the drive; the image is a bonus.
