I am heading to Grand Forks to pick up a puppy from a breeder in Petersburg. (yes I know this may sound crazy). Since I am from MA and have never been to ND, I was wondering if I could have some tips on some nearby places for some quality shots. I have heard that the Red River area is picturesque but don't know of anyplace specifically.
Any tips? Any wildlife between Grand Forks and Devils Lake?
Thanks

Dan,
I honestly can't give you one iota of info. However, It's great to see you here on MWNP.
I've seen your work & you can lend a lot to this forum..... Good luck with the pup. I've got 2 dogs ( 1 Yellow Lab & 1 Golden)- they are my best friends!

It's kind of a bleak time out here, da yup. I've heard of the Red River area, but haven't been through there, so can't advise. You're not likely to find too much wildlife, as most of it has packed up and gone south or into hibernation.
Now, I'm ASSuming that you'll drive. And, if you do, I'm guessing that you'll be driving through Chicago and Minneapolis on I-94. Joel Tuckenbrod (sp) might know of some nice places in Minnesota. The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway will be just to your north when you cross from Wisconsin into Minnesota, and there may be some wildlife as well as nice landscapes.
Also, if you have some time (on your way out - not with the puppy on the way back!), you might consider driving up the Mississippi River, along the Great River Road. Nice scenery and decent roads; there are also numerous state parks along the river with beautiful views...
You're very likely to see bald eagles along the river, especially near open water, as well as common waterfowl like geese and various species of duck. Unfortunately, open water is pretty common right now - it's a warm winter so far. In fact, with all of the open water, the eagles may not be congregating as much as usual. There's also a nice place to watch for eagles, below the dam at Sauk City/Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, which is about 30 miles east of I-94 in south central Wisconsin. If you call the Sauk City City Hall (608/643-3932), they might be able to advise you of eagle watching, for which they're famous. Also in that area is the Baraboo Hills, which are very pretty and some nice views.
It's been a long time since I've taken a long road trip, so I don't know if I'm envious or feeling sorry for you...

Don, you posted the same inquiry in the general discussion forum, and, having grown up in G.F., I gave you a lengthy reply over on that board. Not sure what your timeline is. Hope you were able to see the post before you left.
