Grandfather Mountain opens up registration for this event at the first of the year and it fills up quickly. ( Even at the cost of $100). Only 10 seats remain as of today 1/3.

Just thought I would remind any SENPer that meant to register. This is one of the few times you can have easy access for sunrise shots from atop Grandfather although this time of year it can be socked in.

You can get more info on the event that will be held June 1-3 here if my link works :

This is a combo lecture and photo contest so I might be stretching putting it here rather than the workshop forum. Mods have my permission  to remove it if it belongs elsewhere.

Mike,

Is there a way to get into Grandfather Mountain before or after hours for photography? Seems like a waste to not be there at sunrise or sunset.

Brian,

As far as I know this is the only EASY way. You have total access to the mountain during this weekend and the Camera Clinic held later in the year. A lot of people opt to camp inside Grandfather during this weekend (camping is not normally allowed on the mountain) which gives this easy access. For those staying outside of Grandfather that are participants a "Gate Keeper" opens up the gate well before sunrise to permit entry.

The only other way might be to gain a hiking permit from Grandfather Mountain Office which gives access to the private trails on Grandfather. Not sure the cost but it is a must have as the trails are patrolled by staff. With this permit I believe you can access the mountain from Profile Trail located on the highway and hike in.

Not sure if there are restrictions about overnight camping on these trails which mean your other option would be to hike in before dawn. I believe portions of the trail to the top are considered "difficult" and even require climbing ladders and cables to get over portions of the trail. Not the best of condtions in the dark with a headlight.

Someone more familiar with hiking this area might be able to shed more light on the subject.

I did notice the event is now sold out and waiting list only. The price jumped from last years $75 to $100 this year but it still seems to be a good deal. You get three days of admisson ($14 @ day), free meal on Saturday night, access to the mountain after hours, and the guest lectures. It is nice to see the animal exhibits early in the morning before they are open to the pubic since most of the animals are more active during this time and usually the staff are feeding them as well.
