Moreton Bay Fig
Located San Diego Balboa Park, August 2006. This 90 year old fig tree is huge, with a height of 80 feet with a girth of 42 feet; the canopy spreads about 145 feet. The roots of this tree really fascinated me. This image is cropped to about 75%, there wasn’t much color so I converted to black & white, and the jpg is darker than the original (have to work on that). I like the graphic/abstract look to this image, I think though with some more work I’d have a really nice print out of this image. For the second time in six months I am leaving for a long weekend in the San Diego area. This time though it will be to see my month old grandson (I’m a grandfather, just how cool is that!). Not sure how much nature photography I’ll get to do (my wife has demanded lots of baby pictures) if possible though I’ll borrow my daughters PC and post an image or two. Hope everyone has a great week. Comments welcome and thanks for looking!

David, this is a really nice effort! I see what you liked about the graphic elements in the trees roots. I like your comp and choice of B/W. You have some very nice detail in this but I would have liked just a tad more dof and the resulting sharpness in the foreground.
Don't forget to mark down your calendar for our april CSNP gathering! Thanks for posting!
BTW, congrats on the new grandson, my first is only a few days away!

Thanks Wayne. I am not completly happy with the image yet, for just the reasons you pointed out. There is some good potential here though, so it's a work in progress. Will have to see what I can do about the CSNP gathering in April looks like it would be a lot of fun. And congratulations to you as well

I think every photo you post is better than the last one you post! I really like this one, and I like the B/W presentation. Superb retention of shadow detail with minimal (but perfectly OK IMO) blowage of highlights in a fairly high DR image. The subject matter is very eye-catching to me, and you did a great job of filling the frame (I say this because I am usually tempted to include too much foreground). Excellent job!

Thanks Jason, glad you lliked the photo! Thanks for the great comment too.
I really like this too David, but I'll echo Wayne's comment about the dof - just a little soft in the fg. I think you could improve this considerably by cropping the lower 1/3 of the frame, and make this a horizontal. Great subject - thanks for posting!
