More from the Rockies + Color version
Mount Assiniboine, clouds, Larch trees, wetlands and reflections near sunset, but the B&W says it better. The colors weren't all that great. Let me know what you think about the comp. Too much going on or does it all work together? Thanks!

5D, 17-40 at 32mm, 2-stop hard grad pulled down to just above treeline.

Okay, Marc, you're starting to piss me off now!

So....you're saying this one works for you Mark? It was such an insanely beautiful area it was pretty hard to go wrong. I think Mount Assiniboine is the most amazing mountain I have seen. Believe me, I can't even do it justice with these images.

Mark,
How about you hit him hi and I'll hit him low? Marc, B&W seems to be a good choice since the colors weren't that good. There seems to be a variety of elements that would produce nice colors. The lighting was harsh?

Yeah, there ought to be a law...
Jeez, that Mt Assiniboine looks really nice, I'd go climb that thing if I was up there!

It sorta looks like the darkness of the sky rises and dips along with the skyline, mainly on the right but more subtly all over. ???
The middle trees are a bit grayish, could they use to be darker?
And technically, the reflection should be darker but hey, I'll let you slide on that one.

OK. I re-processed the color version which I wans't quite happy with the first go around. I got it closer to what I saw this time. I still think I may have a preference for the B&W though the color one is growing on me.
Posted by Marc Adamus on January 10, 2007 at 6:17 PM
Mark, yeah. I had initially brought out the middleground to show the golds in the Larches. I should have probably darkened it for the B&W rendering. I could have also done a more accurate burning job when darkening the sky I see.

I wanted to climb that thing bad when I was up there. I plan to do it next time. Surprisingly there's only a few mild rock pitches on most routes, but very exposed. The mountain was really out of season when I was there in October though, and I had no one to go with.

Damn, what a scene!

Darn, you can't ruin this whether you post it in color or b/w! Just a gorgeous scene and your expertise did it unbelievable justice. Great shot, Marc!

Let me know if you guys have any preferences between the two. Thanks for the comments!

I like the color version. I usually do like color over B&W.

I had a tough time deciding which I prefered. I like the contrast and the tones of the black and white, however I think I like the color version better since I feel a greater sense of depth for some reason when I look at it.

In a rare departure from my norm, I'm prefering the B&W on this one. I think it really has great mood, and more depth, especially in the reflection.

These are both very nice images. I can't decide which I like best. I know my eye placement on my monitor changes the contrast some. The middle area with the trees has some loss of detail in th color image. Have you fooled around with Nikon Capture NX which allows one to adjust different areas of an image? Just a thought. Very nice job!!!

I prefer the color version because for some reason the B&W reflection is confusing at first. Maybe it is because you did such a fine job balancing the light with the 2ND. I also like the warm tones of the pink clouds, larch, and grass (or is it cattails.)

Both are sweet, but my vote goes for the color version.

I kind of agree with Craig - the reflection in the B&W is so close in tonality that it almost becomes more an abstract to me. The Color is really beautiful - the muted colors of the grass are an awesome MG with the mountain in schweet light on top/bottom.

Color all the way for me.

Marc, there is so much in the scene; Craig said the reflections were somewhat confusing at first, and I found that too...more so in the BW version. If you crop out the mountains and only include the reflections...and bump up the wetland grasses...it takes on a different look. See http://www.hotdigitaldogs.com/marc.html Many ways to go with this, all GOOD. Your view from the top of the mountain will be interesting, when you get there.

One vote for the color version, because (1) the reflections really jump out in color, and (2) the sunny highlights on the mountains do too.

Hi Marc.

This is another mind-blowing shot! I prefer the color version by far.
As far as I can tell, the reflection is slightly brighter and warmer (in the shadows) than the real thing. Not something that pops out, but I think it's there. This is after staring at the photo for 5 minutes and enjoying it. Thank you for posting. You are amazing. :toast:

I prefer the color version. Not sure why but the B&W version looks flat or the foreground is too busy?
Posted by Marc Adamus on January 11, 2007 at 1:53 PM
I've settled on the color version folks. Thanks for your input. I had some trouble processing it correctly at first and maintaining a natural appearance, but it's sorted out now.

One vote for B&W, since I'm in a B&W mood these days. My oldest voted for the color, and her younger sister liked them both "... as long as the campground is in color if we ever get there."

Marc,

I'm a B&W fan, through and through. But the color version stands out as the clear winner for me. Maybe if the B&W was reprocessed with the sky not having such an obvious gradient, like less black???

But they're really close, wish I took them :razz"

Marc, I prefer the color version, somehow it's more open, has more air to it. It's mostly the foreground that has more depth to it in color. Lovely spot that is, great picture as always!
