Has anyone been to the Badlands east of Bend lately? Are they all dramatic, with junipers and rocks and a dusting of snow? Seems like a good outing, especially for those who get MLK day off. Any interest? I probably won't end up doing this, what with the drive & all, but.....

"Has anyone been to the Badlands east of Bend lately?" I was there last week. I find it to be a very challenging area to photograph well, despite being one of my favorites in the state. Junipers on are not easy subjects and simplifying the high-desert landscape is quite difficult also. The dusting of snow will be gone today. The best time to arrive is within hours of the storm, otherwise the snow/desert contrasts become tougher to handle.

I agree, it's quite challenging....that's kind of the wonder of it, with the gentle topography and all.....If you're interested in spring wildflowers there, my guess would be that May would be quite the time......maybe the grasses will be green then too.....and the roads will be clear....
