Winter Cardinal
Well I can't complain anymore, I was out with camera in hand for about 5 hours today. Some might think me crazy but 15 degrees, freezing drizzle and sleet made for one happy photographer! After shooting intimate landscapes this morning at a local park, I restocked the bird feeder at home and set up for some action. And action it was, cardinals, bluejays, black-capped chickadees, juncos, red-bellied & downy woodpeckers and common house finches were all in attendence.

I very rarely shoot avian so take it easy on the obvious shortfalls with this shot. I'm just pumped that I got out for some great action and got a few shots for a change! :wavey:

Wayne:

Not wanting to give you a big head or anything, but that is one of the best cardinal shots I've seen... (what the heck is the purple cast in the twigs though?)

Tim this shot should be dead nuts neutral gray so what I think what you're seeing is the coloration of my prairiefire flowering crabapple trees here. The branches definitely have colors toward that spectrum and with the thin coat of ice I think it's accurate.

The light was perfect today and I was one happy camper with such a target rich environment. I just need to get a real lens for avian shots now ... oh Debbie ......

Beautiful shot; once again we missed the worst of the snow/ice here in the center of the state

This is outstanding Wayne! Excellent detail and pose - I really like seeing them when they're all puffed-up trying to stay warm. Glad you were able to get out. Nice job!

Very nice picture Wayne. Proud of you for venturing out. The only time I made it out was to chip the ice off the stairs so the dog could get down to the yard to do her thing. Even she did not like the slipping and sliding.

Beautiful shot, Wayne! Can't see how it could be any better. I won't tell Debbie but it looks to me like the lens you have is just about perfect for avian shots!

This is an awesome shot. I admit to being very envious of all of you who live in areas with these magnificent scarlet colored birds. I only get to see them on my rare travels to AZ and KY. Love to work at getting good captures, but may never get anything like this. :toast:
