Thanks to Jesse, Brent, and Scott for telling me about Mayflower Gulch!
I was in Denver this afternoon and decided to take the long way home and head up there to see if I could catch sunset. I got there at 4:15 and had just enough time to hike in a little and get a few shots with the 20D. No time to set up the 4x5 unfortunately. I'll have to go back with more time planned.
More lessons learned:
Adjust the bindings of your snowshoes to your new boots before you get out in the 5 degree air. (ended up leaving them behind)
Boy it gets cool when the sun dips behind the mountains!
Beautiful place! Can't wait to go in further. Wish I could get some clouds someday!

Nice shot, Kalin. That ridge has sooo much personality, and the warm light up top against the blue shadows is outstanding.
Depending on how much snow there's been, sometimes the snow gets compacted enough by skiers and snowshoers that you can actually walk the road without going in up to your waist. Once above the trees, however, it's a different ballgame.
I was going to bring up Mayflower Gulch in a separate post, but will use yours as a jumping-off point instead. Anybody else notice that one of the new Chevy Silverado commercials is from Mayflower? Some of the shots are from on top the ridge flanking the south side of the basin. I've been up that road out of Mayflower, and I know Brent D. has. Then there's that shot of the truck barreling down the road just down from the first big building ruins (not seen in shot), heading back into the trees, going a lot faster than I would if it were my truck.

Shazam! This is sweet! i hope to get somewhere close to this on my Spring Trip.
Sweet Kalin!!! Great shot! So glad you made it up there! Just whetted your appetite to get all the way up in there, didn't it!!!
Todd, I'll have to watch for those commercials. Wild. I know what you mean about speed on that road. I've always gotten a kick out of the 20MPH signs about half way up the road, thinking "who could get above 20MPH on this?" well, one night about 4 years, I was late getting there for sunset, and I think maybe, just maybe, i did! DOH!
Very Nice Kalin! Better than anything I have after umpteen trips up there. The light on the serrated ridge is spectacular and the cold, blue foreground is a nice contrast.

Very nice, Kalin - nice light and shadows on the ridge. If you want clouds, hire Todd.

Thanks for the comments! I guess I was more lucky than I thought. I ran into another photographer who frequents the spot and he mentioned that it's overcast or foggy often. It will be fun to explore the gulch more leisurely next time.
