I need to upgrade from the standard CRT monitor that came with my generic PC. The Dell 24" widescreen gets good reviews, but most of these relate to gamimg and DVD's. Does anyone have experience of this monitor? Can I assume good performance with gaming and DVD's can be translated to digital photos? Maybe someone will persuade me to go for something completely different?

Hi Ian,
Prior to me buying a 24" iMac I used a 24" Dell for all my photo editing.
It is a superb monitor, crystal clear and holds colour and brightness well across nearly all the screen....there is the normal uneven brightness around the edges, but this is almost un-noticable and only shows up if you have an even mid-tone colour as a background.
I would say that the iMac screen is a touch brighter but the Dell was crisper and the images seemed very sharp and contrasty on it.
Given the price that the 24" screens go for now (£450) you will not find better value than the Dell. Don't take the word "value" here to mean low quality.
One thing....make sure that you don't have to look over your screen to talk to others in your office/study/room, it is massive and you will easilly be able to win hide and seek behind it

Ian...

I too have the Dell 24" monitor and can also highly recommend it. Clear, bright, sharp, easy to calibrate and affordable (at least on this side of the pond!)

Good luck,

Bill

I have two Dell 24" monitors and can highly recommend them. I also have the Apple 30" Cinema display and the two are very similar in color and brightness. I've actually compared the two side by side after calibrating them both with my Spyder 2 Pro. I'd give the Apple a slightly higher rating, but I think that's mostly becasue of it's sheer size. The Dell is an excellent monitor for the price. On top of it's photo editing ability, the Dell also has a built in card reader for all types of memory cards (SD, CF, stc.) plus the usual USB ports.

Hi Ian,

Don't buy a Dell FWP2405 as it has been superceeded by the FWP2407 which resolved a couple of issues Dell had with the older model. The 2407 itself is a great LCD, especially at the prices it can be bought for now!! I changed my monitor to a 2407 a few months back to get more screen real-estate and love it.

Many thanks for all the advice - I'm going for it (the 2407, thanks Nick).
