Yes, I am a neanderthal. (So simple a caveman could do it...) Now that it's out, I'm wondering where to store my digital images and all the photo stuff when I get my new computer. I don't want to just dump it on a spankin' new drive and start filling up the new drive(s) on day one.
So, what have you folks done with your files when you purchased a new computer???
Thanks!

I back up all my images on two different external hard drives (I recently got a Lacie 500 GB drive for under $200). I also store my best images on my computer's hard drive, where I can easily access them, and I also save the best ones to Mitsui Gold CDs, which I buy on Ebay and are supposed to last 300 years. I guess there's also a new "gold" cd that may be a little less expensive.

What are you doing with your old computer? If you're not dumping it, keep it around and use it on a home network as a backup/file server. Then you don't need to immediately transfer all of the files somewhere.
I would definately make/keep backups of your important images and other files to DVD/CD. Also, like Grant mentioned, external hard drives are a great solution that you can move between computers. Just remember that an external hard drive is just as likely to fail as an internal drive, like anything electronic. Don't rely on it as your only backup.

Dave,
Also something to think about when you get a new computer is to install a seperate drive for your images and documents. If you for some reason have a problem with the OS and need to put the computer through a recovery cycle, having your images on a seperate drive means that you don't have to worry about restoring them once everything is back up and running. I'm don't know if you are running Windows, but if so I put "My Documents" on the backup drive instead of the main drive. You just change the properties of My Documents target and it takes care of the rest for you.

All my images are on external hard drives - 2 copies (also backed up on DVD's).
I only use the internal hard drive for current work.

I keep copies of all my images on 3 external drives also so changing the PC isnt much of a challenge.
