Ok,

First problem. For some reason, when I flatten my images, i'm losing some saturation and contrast. I've never noticed this before, just as of late has it been doing this. I've checked the histogram before and after flattening and it doesnt change, but there is a significant change in appearance of the images after flattening. Any ideas?

Second problem. I was working on an image yesterday, saved it, came back to it today and now it wont open. I go to file-open, select the file, and rather than opening my image, it brings up the "new document" box with the image title in it, as if I clicked file-new. Whats going on here? I've gone into windows explorer, the image file still exists and is the same file size I saved it as yesterday, in the same location, but now it tries to create a new document instead of opening the file.

Your first problem is not really a problem. It's just the appearance of the image due to the way Photoshop caches. My guess is if you view the image at 100% you will see no change. You can avoid this by setting the cache levels to 1 though it may slow you down.

The second problem I suspect is a corrupt file. Time to restore from backup (if you have one) or start over. I always save 2 copies of every image every time I'm done working on it.

Guy,

I tried viewing the image at 100%, and it still changes significantly. I triend setting the cache levels to 1, didnt help, all the way up to 5, didnt help. This is really bugging me. I have to flatten images to have them printed, there must be something i'm doing wrong. Thanks for the help, got anything else?

Guy, disregard my previous response. I was viewing at print size, in this case 20x24. When i viewed actual pixels, there is no change when i flip back and forth in my history from flattened to unflattened. This does still have me worried tho, will this change be visible in a print?

Regarding my other problem, here's a little more to stir into the mix. I was able to open the file in photoshop elements 3.0 for some reason. When i tried to resave it, it was unable saying that there is a 2.00GB limit on psd. files, my file is about 2.2GB. So i saved it as a tiff instead, and when i try to open it up in PS7, it still wont open.

Adam, it shouldn't change in the print. The reason you're seeing it at sizes other than 100% is that Photoshop is keeping smaller cached versions of the image so it doesn't have to resize from the full size image every time you change the zoom factor. The cache is obviously an interpolated version and may have some rounding errors so flattening the image may push some values to the next level when the cache is refreshed.

You can save larger files in "psb" format (rather than "psd") if you want to stay with the Photoshop format. I'm not sure if there's a limit on TIFFs but it may be that PS is trying to load it all into memory. If that's the case, try increasing your virtual memory size by a couple of megs and see if that helps.
