Always better to submit Jpeg files of not much more than 3 mb to newspapers...picture desk editors get annoyed with large files, unless they have specifically asked for them.
I've had 2Mb jpeg shots used for halfpage broadsheet in colour too.
Any shots I submit to newspapers have had a small amount of sharpening applied, just enough to make sure the photo editor doesn't think they're soft and not enough to matter too much if more is applied at the printing stage.
Most sports togs I know shoot using Jpeg at level 6 or 8.
Papers want content above everything else....content and quality is a good combination, but big file sizes don't generally mean more quality.
A good way to start with newspaper submissions is to phone the picture editor and find out what they want and what email you send them to.
Hope this helps a little,

1 repliesCan somebody tell me how best to submit a picture to a newspaper?
For instance, a converted raw that's been cropped etc. (Output as a tif.)
Should I sharpen it as I would for a print at home or leave it unsharpened? What sort of DPI does a newspaper print at?
Any info gratefully accepted.
Thanks
