I was out at Rocky Mountain Arsenal last night, looking for ferruginous hawks. They've been pretty active and easy to spot with the snow cover. They are also a state threatened, iconic prairie creature. After looking for awhile, I saw a flash of feathers and when I drove closer, realized a ferruginous hawk had just killed a rabbit (attached photo). Of course I was thrilled to witness and photograph the event.
My equipment for vehicle shooting is a D200 with 600 F4 and Kirk window mount.
Magpies badgered the hawk until he gave up and let them eat. He moved maybe 5 yards away. After 20 minutes or so, I heard a yip and saw a coyote coming over the ridge (attracted by the magpies), then 3 more coyotes.
So then coyote #1 took the rabbit and trotted off, ending the story. I was in awe of what had happened in such a short span of time! The end.

Not exactly the most heart-warming story I've heard all day (Barb and I did just get back from seeing "The Pursuit of Happyness," after all), but very fascinating account, and awesome photos! Of course, I'm feeling quite sorry for the rabbit, but 'tis nature's way.

What an amazing natural occurrence to see! It must have been fantastic to witness the laws of nature in action.
Now about the headline - Does the "3 parts" refer to the rabbit as well as the story?
Thanks for including us in this glimpse into the animal kingdom,
