Slimbridge today. This one got close to the hide. Would have preferred a slightly lower viewpoint but that hide has to be the worst designed hide for photography that I have seen.

1 DSMk11 500 + 2x tripod & Wimberley ISO400 1/30th f13 Processed in Capture One crop approx 15-20%

John,
Nice shot. Which hide was this from?

Hi John,

Im really impressed that this was shot at 1/30th second. I have been using a 500mm f4 for about 9 months now and I am still working with just a regular Manfrotto ball head (not even a big one!). I am toying with the idea of getting a Wimberley and would be interested in hearing if you believe whether it contributed significantly to the success you have had here at 1/30th second? Which Wimbereley are you using?

Thanks,

Niall

Sorry do not know the name of the hide but it is the one right next to the optics shop near the tea rooms. Someone else here may know the name but you can not miss it as it has a wooden bar across the viewing opening. Had 4 lapwing walk very close in on a couple of occasions. Also the later you leave it in the afternoon the worse the light gets as the sun drops behind the hide.

I am using the full Wimberley head, not a great fan of side mounting a heavy camera and lens combination. Also I was using the 500 on a smaller Manfrotto tripod with a 3 way head and it was not up to the job, far too much flex on the head and the tripod was driving me nuts with the locking mechanisms coming loose all the time. I switched to a braced aluminium Manfrotto tripod and the Wimberley and it is far more stable. There is no way that I would have got this image with my old set up. I think in general I am getting a far greater proportion of sharp images with Wimberley and the new tripod. It is heavier to carry round but thats life I think the trade off is worth it. I am sure that there are other combinations that will do a good job and someone may like to chip in with what they are happy with. Hope this is of some help
