Im looking for some advice in particular from those who use the 5D with the 17-40L.
I currently have a cokin P series filter holder that I have modified.
What systems are people using with this combo because I am getting problems with vignetting and cannot use a polariser at the same time?
Your thoughts and advice appreciated

If you are talking about external vignetting, caused by the actual filter holder visible in the shot, you will have to handhold the ND grad in front of the polarizer. Otherwise you will have to buy a bigger filter holder e.g. X-PRO or Z series if you're sticking to Cokin, and these are BIG and you'll need to buy bigger ND grads, which are expensive at that size. If you're talking about light fall-off on the sensor you can't do anything much about it, shoot at smaller aperture, avoid the use of both polarizer & ND grad, avoid extreme wide-angle shots. Of course you can remove internal vignetting with software programs.

Yes it is external vignetting I am concerned with - And I am aware that I probably need to look at the Z- Pro or something similar, But I was interested to learn what filters and holders others were routinely using as hand holding the filter is a real pain and usually end up with a finger in the frame.
I am considering getting the Z-pro holder along with some Hi-Tec grads maybe. Still not sure how this will work with a polariser added to the mix

I use the Lee filter system, you wont have any problems with the Lee system on that lens. But like all large filter systems they are expensive. Every bit as good as the Singh Ray system I used to use until my LF lens was to big for the Pseries holder and I had to switch to Lee.

Look at Robert White to get a idea of the system. A polariser is no problem to use with a couple of grads all stacked

You can use the solution that Tim Fitzharris uses - he uses little pieces of duct tape to hold his grads in place on wide lenses.

What kind of polarizer are you using - is it the sprocketed drop-in kind that fits in the P-holder or is it a screw-on type? I got around the problem by taking my polarizer out of the sproket mount and glueing it into a 77mm cokin adapter ring so the polarizer screws right onto the lens, then if I need a grad I mount a shaved down Cokin P-Holder onto the adapter ring (shaved down to one slot) and I have a polarizer, grad combo that won't vignette on wide lenses.
