Monitor Calibration Tips/Advice

Hi,

I've recently purchased a new LCD monitor and have been struggling to get a satisfactory result when profiling it.

I am using the Spyder 2 for profiling which is easy enough to use and did a good job on my old CRT monitor but so far I have been disappointed with the results on the LCD one.

One query I have is: is it better to do the profiling in a darkened room? My monitor sits right next to a window (at an angle) and I also use a desk lamp (which I have been turning off while profiling) but I was wondering if the light from the window could be interfering with the Spyder?

Any tips you guys have on your profiling techniques would be appreciated - it's beginning to do my head in now!

Cheers

Rich.

Hi Rich,

Technically the ambient light can have an affect on the calibration and profiling of a monitor, pre-calibration and profiling should always be done in the same light that you will be using for viewing.

I assume you have the latest software for the Spyder, the earlier versions didn't handle LCD's very well at all.

First and most important is the calibration, i.e setting of white/black points and gamma, I believe the Spyder 2 software calls this pre-cal, I would also recommend that the luminance level be set lower than normally recommended for an LCD (most colibration programs seem to recommend a luminance value of around 140, I find that we get a better match and result if I use a figure of between 100 to 110). Only when this calibration is done can an accurate profile be produced by the profiling part of the software.

What Phil H says, plus don't try to calibrate the screen until it is stable. Leave it on for 2-3 hours before attempting to calibrate.

I'm in the move to the new modern lcd monitor as well I've bought a Huey Monitor Colour Correction system I have not as yet set it up as I have got everything ready, but the instruction for Huey says I should allow the monitor to warm up for at least 2hrs befor calibration. Huey is a Pantone product it came as the recommeded unit for this job with my R2400 Epson.

Will keep you informed, I expect to be setting everything in the next day or two.

Thanks for the responses. I have been letting the monitor warm up for a while but maybe not long enough.

Phil, thanks for the info on the luminance settings. I will do another calibration/profiling session tomorrow and bare these settings in mind. (I've just downloaded the most up-to-date version of the Spyder software as well).

Cheers.
