Hi All,
I'm really sorry to bother you with this quite off-topic question,
but I got the following problem in posting a picture of mine.
I hope that someone of you can help.
I'm not a memember, therefore I can only post the picture using the url field. this is the URL that points to my picture:
http://www.grussello.com/npposting/etnasunset.jpg

However, when I hit the submit button in the posting form I got a page with only some html code with the following line at the benning:

<strong>Error with your image URL: The address you entered is not a valid JPG file</strong><p>
Please press your BACK button on your browser and try again<p>

For what it says it seems that the jpg file is not valid. Then I would like to know what is a "valid JPG" file.

I really would like to show you my picture and getting some comment from this great community. Hope that someone can help me.

thanks.

My guess is the code that generates the thumbnails may not like something about the file. What software are you using to generate the jpg?

Hi Guy.
I converted from a TIFF to JPEG with the "optimize for the web" option in PS.

Another possibility is that the file size is too large. I have gotten that issue a couple of times when I haven't been careful about things.

My workflow for posting is start with the original file to post, resize to 600 pixels on the longest size at 72 dpi, possibly sharpen a little, "Save As" to the highest compression that keeps the file under 120k, and then post.

This is a bit different that what many others may do, but here is why. The photos I post I have usually printed, so they are already sharpened. Shrinking usually doesn't do much damage to sharpening, but a slight touchup is sometimes handy. 600 pixels on the longest sides and 120K max file size is because I have been reading this site since about two weeks after it started six years ago and I have been too lazy read the updated posting guidelines

I've never really liked the "optimize for the web" option since the above works and I know what happens.

Actually you can use "save for web" and optimize to a given size. I suggest you try it and keep the file size under 200k and see if it's still an issue.

Thanks Dan,
The size of the file is just 151k, which is far below the limit (although there should be no limit in size if the file is hosted in another server).

Tried converting from tiff to jpg using other software such as IrfanView and the result is still the same...

Another thought - do you save the file as a progressive JPG? is there any exif information or other extensions included?

No, the file is not saved as progressive and all the information and extension are not included.

Maybe you could try to download the file and post yourself.
If it goes through than it hsould be a problem with the hosting server.
here are two urls, one saved in ps and the other in Irfanview:

I saved it to my local drive and uploaded to NPN. It posted with no problem:

Thanks Guy for your time...I don't know if my pic is worth all this from you!
There are two more try-outs, but if you do not have time I'll understand.
One is to try to post it using the given url (in other words using my hosting server) .
The second one is try to upload it to your server and post it as url from there.
I repeat, if you don't feel like doing it no worries!
Thanks anyway for your time.

Giovanni, I just tried linking to it and got the same error. It looks like our error screen has a problem too - will get fixed ASAP.

I've seen this happen before if the URL is too long. Try moving the photo into the root directory and see if that helps.

Sorry for the trouble and thanks for your patience!

I'm glad to help.

Looks like the problem is your hosting service. When I tried linking to your site I got the error but when I uploaded the file to my site and linked to it, it works just fine. The image is on the Man and Nature gallery now for you to see, but I will delete it in a bit.

Guy and Jim thanks a lot for your support.
I'll try to put up to the root dir and let's see!

Finally I managed to post it.
I used a different hosting.

Thanks again to Guy and Jim for their support!
