Hey everyone,
I may post this question sometime in the marketing forum but I wanted to start here first.
Can anyone who has been represented in a gallery or shop give some tips on the whole process of approaching businesses for representation? First of all what was the first contact-in person, call first, introduction letter or...?

I visited the galleries first and just asked them how I could get in. If it's a privately owned gallery the guidelines may be different for each one of course. Co-ops and publicly owned galleries will generally have an application and screening process. Dues, wall fees, expenses, and commission sharing arrangements seem to differ drastically among them all. Co-ops generally may have a work requirement as well (1 or 2 days/month volunteering to work the front desk, art shows, receptions, etc.). (one example locally - one local co-op charges only $35 dues annually, a small monthly wall fee, 1 day/month work requirement, and only takes 10%, while another just one block down charges $600 dues annually, same wall fees, 2 days/month, and takes 20% - the difference - one is older and has no mortgage any longer so it can afford to charge less).

Hope this helps. :wavey:
