I am finally getting around doing the firmware update to my D2x. Can someone share with me what setting change and how it improves the camera's performance? Thanks

I'm afraid it's been too long to remember the specific setting changes, but I "believe" the custom settings remained the same and the the shooting menu returned to defaults. It wasn't as bad as I feared when I first noticed some of the settings had returned to default however.

As far as improvements, your best bet is to visit the Nikon web site and it'll list them all. One of the best improvements IMO is the ability to use battery power now to enable you to clean your sensor. Great improvement there. Function button capability has been improved as well - much nicer. I use that a lot more now than before.

Main thing I cared about was Mirror Lock-up for cleaning unplugged. May also add a B&W setting, and I think better focus tracking. Just be sure to follow-the steps exactly or I hear you can mess things up pretty good to the point of needing to send the camera back to NIKON.
