Hi to all,
At the minute I'm using a Canon 20D which is permanently fastened to my 500mm , I also own a 300mm which is getting very little use at the minute as I don't want to keep swapping lenses , so I'm going to buy a secondhand body to solve this problem , my local camera shop has a mint D60 for sale at £225 and Mifsuds have a 300D for around the same price , any advice on which model to go for would be much appreciated.

Kind regards
Andy...

Hi Andrew,

I've not tried using the 300D, but it's lack of Al Servo would annoy me! If you go down the D60 route, give me a shout as I'm trying to sell mine at the moment.

Andy

Have you thought about trying to get a S/H 10d?

Surely you could pick a good one up for under £400 ?? these days

Hi Andy

I owned a 300D and whilst I was more than happy with the image quality from the camera the lack of control of the AF mode was a big problem for me, although in reality it did not cause me too many missed shots. There used to be the unofficial 'hacked firmware' download for the 300D which reenabled some of the missing features in the 300D such as mirror lockup, possibly AF mode was also included as well.

If I was in your position I would probably opt for the 300D, despite the annoying AF mode. I think image quality at higher ISO's will be better and also other features such as LCD display, CF write speed, etc will all be a bit better in the 300D.

I would also agree with Larry, shop around for a used 10D, same sensor as the 300D but with a better body and feature set.

Ffordes have a 10D for £399 at the moment.

Also Walters have a 10D + grip at £300, item code 47541 on the following page ;

Walters used Canon stuff

cheers

Sean

D60's files show their age now......reds thet almost drip of the screen and a fair bit of noise above ISO200.
10D's probably the best cheap digital at the moment, but you could also consider a US imported 400D......

Not so long ago Mifsuds were selling 10D bodys for £199 as they were over stocked.

Having used a borrowed d60, and owned a 300d, and used a borrowed 10d, I'd definately go for the 10d....no questions. What you'd marginally save on money you'd be short on performance and quality and other reasons as stated above.

D60 files are still plenty good enough in the right hands John   .

The only thing that I find a problem with the D60 is its response speed compared with the 1DII .

If you're going to use your 2nd camera with any sort of slow shutter speeds or with a macro lens, then the lack of mirror lock-up may be an issue with the 300D.

If you can scrounge the extra dosh, then I'd probably look at a 10D.

Whatever, at those prices you don't really loose out on much - feel sorry for the poor mugs that bought them when they where new
