Okay, so this is what I appear to be up to as regards Favorite Places. If I sound tentative it's because I just started doing my pages this way and it hasn't had time to settle in yet. I've got a couple other pages like this which I've put together in the last month or so and am thinking about doing more. Comments appreciated.
I like the idea of location-specific pages. I assume you will build a single page for each 'favorite location'. If this is correct, I'd suggest that you make some of the images smaller and also keep the number of images fairly low. There are two reasons for my suggestion: Smaller and fewer images will load faster, and viewers will likely look at them all if they don't have scroll too much. The Web has become a, 'I want content, and I want it right now!' kind of place. Additionally, the pages will be easier to maintain.
If you have more images from a location that you'd like for visitors to access, you could put links to them on the bottom of the page.
You have put a lot of effort into your site, and you have some very nice work there!

Thanks guys. I'll have to think about running the sections over more than one page. I'm not sure if people find it preferable to click a link to open a new page or just scroll down one page. I'm not worried about loading speed too much since even a "slow" high-speed connection will load even the longest page faster than you can view it. But it's an evolving project. I'd like to figure out how to use InDesign so I can mock up pages like a magazine and turn them into PDF files for downloading.

PDF is a good idea for downloading for those who want to, but I wouldn't use them as a replacement for the HTML though. I like that idea of the magazine layout. I agree with Preston in shrinking the pictures a little so it's not so overwhelming to see a page.
clicking to a new page would work for me if it's to show a bigger picture. a single picture that is.
