Anyone know whether Mr Adams double matted or single matted and how he attached the mat board to his mount board? I believe he usually tissue mounted his images permanently to the mount board, so I'm curious if the mat board was permanently adhered as well or hinged. Thanks.

Paul,

I just looked on my copy of "The Print" by Ansel Adams. He cuts a single window mat that exposes the mount board around the mounted print. He does not say whether or not the overmat is attached to the mount board. Logically, it seems that attaching the overmat to the mount would be a bad idea. If the print ever had to be remounted, or the overmat needed to be replaced, you'd be out of luck.

Just my 0.002.

Thanks Preston. I am sure you are right about the overmat not being permanently attached to the mount board, at least for the reason of replacement as you said. Although I'm wondering whether remounting was really possible with his prints the way he mounted them.

I've seen a few from the era when he was traveling, speaking, and selling them from the trunk of his car. Don't I wish I was there at the time! The ones I have seen were hinged.

Could someone show me the "hinged" method. I "hinge" mine but am wondering if I do it properly...

I was just at an art and framing show in Vegas and attended a seminar on mounting. The instructor told a story how she received a call at her shop asking if she dry mounted photos on white rag mat board and could do it today. She said yes, and he said he'd come in. As she was writing up the order, she asked him his last name...Adams......first name....Ansel.

I would assume the window mat would be made with the same white rag mat as the mount mat. I also would assume the boards were hinged together.
