I don't know, the beta of PS CS3 had the RAW conversion tools that are in Lightroom and does everything else I need.... not sure we really need both applications ?

CLONING AND HEALING TOOLS!!!

John Lightroom is so much more than just a RAW conversion tool. It is the image management tool we photographers have been needing for a long time as our image libraries explode in size. Plus printing in Lightroom is a quantum leap ahead of Photoshop - including PS-CS3.

Bryan as soon as Adobe releases the SDK for Lightroom we can expect to see third party modules that do both the things you mention plus much more as time goes by.

Hey Bryan I've been doing some digging into Lightroom 1.0 and Adobe heard the beta users and have included a clone/heal tool in Lightroom 1.0!!!

Yeah, that's what I was all giddy about. It said in the press release that they included it.

Rick,
Aside from the image management, would you recomend this for raw conversion instead of the CS2 raw converter? I have played around with the beta version and kind of feel like it's an equalivant or close to Apple's aperature software.

Erik I think a more equal comparison is between Lightroom and Photoshop CS3. Both use the same ACR engine that combines features of the previous ACR and Pixmantec's RAW Shooter Premium.

I think where folks get confused about Lightroom is they assume it is merely a image management tool or merely a RAW converter. It does both of these VERY well plus it has what I think is a state of the art Print module. The print module is a quantum leap ahead of what is in Photoshop. It is much more like a good RIP Print tool minus the direct connection to the printer. I do ALL my printing in Lightroom.

Does it replace Photoshop? Certainly not. There will always be a place for Photoshop in our workflow. If it "replaces" anything I'd say it replaces Adobe Bridge but even that has been vastly improved in CS3. Bridge in CS3 even looks a lot like Lightroom.
