Seagull Arch
A seagull flys through this beautiful landscape along Oregon's coast. This is a single exposure. Can anyone guess where it is? You can only get here at minus tide.

5D, 17-40 at 20mm, 1/125 at F13, ISO 100.

Seal Rock?

No, not near Seal Rock. Keep guessing.

NIce line up of the elements, Marc. I have no idea where it is.

I would guess around the Cape Kiwanda area... I like this, you might tone down the thru the arch portion.....

John, it is not around Cape Kiwanda. A bit too much saturation?

Cape Sebastian area?? The area beyond the arch seems a little hot on my monitor. I would suggest toning that down slightly and maybe a slight boost in contrast.

Not cape Sebastian either. I agree it was a bit hot. I had only one exposure to work with. There is detail in all the whites though....I did up the contrast a little before posting this on the web which I think is to blame there.

Marc the 2 small rocks in the way background give it away...also there is a lighthouse on that point just to the right of those 2 rocks...

there are a couple ways to get to this vantage point and the main one is going to Oceanside and heading north through the tunnel and then over more rocks at low tide, that is where you come to this vantage point looking north at the Cape Meares Lighthouse!

if I am wrong then forgive me for being so bold but I can show you another place that looks exactly like this with those same rocks in the background.....

we may have been shooting there the same day....as I did see a guy with lots of Cannon Gear when I asked how he was he told me he was just out to get a couple crappy shots......

ding ding ding! We have a winner. Oceanside it is, but you're not getting to this arch unless the tide is around zero feet or below. I actually got stuck on the other side of this arch, on the next beach down due to the tide coming in quick. There was an epic sunset - absolutely amazing, that I couldn't pass up shooting, so I let the tide get the better of me. After some waist-deep wading, I decided to plow up an embankment, through some brush and through a few "private" residences with plenty of no-tresspass signs and eventually made my way out to the road which I followed back to my car at oceanside. This arch has some great possibilities too, but only about once every couple weeks. I'll post the other images later. I was there last night and while I am a guy with lots of Canon gear, I'm not out to get crappy shots  Don't you think Cape Mears has some nice spots too? I'm in the midst of a North Coast project and am amazed at the rugged shores up there. Very much similar to the Olympics.

I think this is a spot I refer to as "Jerry's Private Beach" since he owned of one of those no-tresspass signs and caught me scrambling out a few years ago. He warned me about the
dangers of unstable banks/landowner liability issues... since they own the property all the way down to the beach. He was nice enough about the trespass and allowed me to finish my sunset shoot but made crystal clear that his decision to sell his beachfront in California and relocate here was to view the sea from his home without "a bunch of people on my beach"

You were lucky to get out un-noticed if this is the location I think it is!

Marc, if you are going back there anytime,l just let me know...that is my hometown.....I grew up there.....the scenery is unmistakable in your photo as I have been there hundreds of times....Larry is a good friend of mine and has been there many times too.....

but I do have to admit its not often you see a gull fly through that arch!!!!

I figured if we had anyone familiar with this place it would be someone on PNWNP. Thanks for the info guys. I'm doing a lot of shooting on the North coast as a part of my recent project, and some of the images will be used in one of my calendar lines - the Oregon Coast 2008. If I'm returning to this area anytime soon, I'll try to get in touch. Obviously it was never my intent to tresspass. If Jerry dosen't want anyone on his beach, I'd say he's certianly found just the right one! Nothing easy about getting over there and it's only possible at low tide anyway! I just hope his house dosen't fall into the ocean - it looks pretty erroded in some areas.
