Just as an fyi I thought I'd pass on my recent experience with Northwest whom I've been a fairly frequent flyer of for many years as they always seem to have the most convenient flights from my airport. I've always gotten seats toward the back of the plane so I would be on first after first class and elite members in order to have room in the overheads left for gear etc. On my first leg they did the first class and elite and then just general boarding! No problems but I've only seen them do that after a delay etc. Anyway, the next leg in MSP they did the same thing and upon return again in SanDiego and MSP. Now you have people that are sitting in the front getting on first and everyone backed up waiting to get to the back. Doesn't make sense and I have no idea why the change. If I knew they would always do that I guess I'd not worry about where I book my seats and then just make sure you are ready fast to board. Just a heads up.
Yeah, I take nwa to go home to asia and I noticed they started doing that about a year ago. Basically, if you see a line forming in front of the gate, just get in it.
According to a story I read a few months ago, this is now standard procedure. They tested general boarding for a couple of months and found that this method was faster than calling sections and then made it standard on all routes.
