Return for a second time and usually it doesn't work.
However in this case it did and much too my surprise.
Had been the week before and had observed this bird hunting.
Everything seemed to work, but after this viewing no more.
Taken using the car as a hide.
Nikon D2x's + 600mmm AFS II + 1.4 conv.

Lovely light Major, and I like the look of concentration in his eye.

Tremendous shot, superb light and great 3D feel. Most jealous

Super flight shot of a super bird... although I would perhaps like a bit less room atop and more below..... (more personal preference)

Lovely light here highlights the flame paintjob these birds have. Nice shot Major.

Good detail in the shadow area under the wings, shame about the lighter patches, clouds, towards the bottom of the frame. If it was my shot however I'd be please aspunch at getting such detail on the bird.

I like the shot a lot as is, but certain things suggest this has been tweaked a lot (I'm not suggesting it's a crime but you haven't mentioned any tech details). The eye looks unrealistically yellow and it looks a little "hard edged" - especialy its right wing tips. it also looks oversharpened around the face - is this a large crop i wonder?

I wonder mr David J Slater just how many Short-eared Owls you have ever come across.
I for one can safely say that the yellow eye is glaringly yellow especially if you get as close to one as I have done.
I dont profess to being a techno I just enjoy taking photographs.
As far as tweaking goes I have done no more to this image than I would do normally.
It has been cropped but what do you class as a large crop?
Cant see any images of yours but if I could I might be looking for something in the way of excellence.
I will be out tomorrow snapping away again, but at least I will be full of optimism no matter where I am.
