Light table lamps

I have come into possession of a Porta-Trace light table. It's the 14x17-inch model and will replace my 10x12-inch one. Since I don't shoot 35mm film anymore, the larger light table holds more 6x7 chromes than the smaller one. My problem is the fuorescent tubes in the larger one aren't the right color temperature(I beleive). They appear much bluer than the ones in my 10x12 lightable that I purchased with 5000K lamps. I opened the lightable to confirm this and it has what appear to be standard Philips brand tubes. Does anyone know where I can get 5000K fluorescent tubes that are the small (18-inch long) 15 or 30 watt kind in Denver? Would Home Depot or Lowes carry this type of lamp?

Doug,

Amazingly, I found the color corrected bulbs at Walmart a couple months ago. Super-Walmarts might have a better selection.

I recently built a light table and had a hard time finding the right color lamps. Depending on the size you need Home Depot carries some 5000K bulbs. I ended up ordering from NaturalLighting.com.

Good luck.

I have a couple suggestions for you.

Of all things aquariums require color balanced lighting. Especially if you are trying to grow aquatic plants. There is a pet store at Wadsworth and 10th that had a really nice selection of such bulbs including one bulb that was color corrected and had a mirrored side of the tube to improve light output in a particular direction. The bulb was also colored balanced and the one I used for an aquarium lasted several years.

The second is to look at Ott-lights. They are carried in art stores, craft stores and fabric stores and they make color corrected flourescent lights. I have a small Ott light for reviewing prints, but it does seem a little more blue than natural sunlight. They have several bulb sizes.

One more place I just thought of is the grow store. These guys sell lots of specialty lighting for growing plants indoors. Though I suspect that their business success is not coming from selling lights to collectors of african violets. There is a grow store in Lakewood on Colfax west of Carr. There is also one in Colorado Springs on Garden of the Gods.

I was in Home Depot yesterday searching for what I figured would be an obscure halogen bulb for a small desklamp. They not only had the right style, but in 3 different wattages.... Then there was a whole aisle of flourescent bulbs; there's a good chance you'll find what you need there.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was in my local Super Walmart last night and Tony wasn't kidding, they had the tubes.
