V-Shadow
This morning I was up at Crown Point shooting what I thought was gonna be another fire red sunrise, well the red did not really ever come through completely but I noticed this while I was shooting towards the east. I have seen 100's of sunrises up there but never seen a shadow like this....A friend of mine gave me his opinions and I am curious to see what your opinions are on what caused this....

Thanks in advance
Darren
Photo is AS IS straight out of the camera...

I've seen this effect before and I'm sure there are aliens trying to control the atmosphere.

Simple, there was a cloud (that you can't see here) obstructing the light at a lower altitude/angle than the clouds catching the light. At other locations the light obstruction could have been caused by a mountain peak or similar. I've seen this effect dozens of times. I know it well and am sure as to what caused it. I've captured it in some of my most famous images too. It's a spectacular effect.

Cool effect, I love it when somebody stands to close to the sun and you get their outline......

Maybe not a cloud, but a mountain - Mt. Rainier. The V shape is an inverted volcano shadow.
Look at this picture taken at same time as yours?: King 5 Weatherpix

Could well be a mountain too, as I noted above. Rainier is a great guess - or St. Helens? Not sure what direction you were facing......... This is Banff's Mount Rundle creating the same effect.

This is so much like the sky I was seeing Saturday morning that it isn't funny. But I was driving south from Olympia at 7:30 am. The same shadow was clearly cast upon the red clouds from Mt. Rainier. It was a beautiful sky, but at no point during that awesome sunrise did I have a suitably open foreground for photos.
