Darren, crop out that log totally and see what you think?
To me, it makes it very un-literal and consequently more interesting.

Darren,
I like how you captured all the shades of black in the rocks without blowing out the water. For some reason the twig beneath the log bugs me a little. Mark's proposed crop seems like a neat idea.
Best regards,

Love the almost glassy sharpness on the darker rock in this image as it contrasts nicely with the soft flowing water

That's an interesting suggestion. I took Mark's crop suggestion as just cropping the top just below the log, but keeping the width intact. It looks really abstract and graphical with that crop (just scroll the window to see).

I like Marks crop idea and your crop is pretty nice too.

Darren, I like the original uncropped version better.

Another vote for the original. Where was this? The rocks don't look like Oregon....

Just the top, not the sides.
To me, the log doesn't add anything, in fact, get rid of it totally and I think your comp would be great. The shot would then go from the very literal on the left to the very un-literal on the right. I think it would tell more of a story, my eye would be going back and forth following that feeling.
IMHO, as usual.
